Rinse cranberries thoroughly in a bowl of water. Remove and discard any cranberries that are shriveled, soft, discolored, or floating. Drain well.

Combine sugar, or alternative sweetener, with water in a large saucepan. Place over medium heat and stir until the sweetener is completely dissolved.

Add cranberries to the saucepan. Bring mixture to a gentle boil, then lower heat to a simmer. Cook uncovered, stirring occasionally, until cranberries burst and the sauce thickens, approximately 12 to 15 minutes.
