Preheat the oven to 425°F. Lightly coat a 9x13 inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.

Add ground beef and garlic salt to a large skillet. Cook over medium-high heat, breaking apart the meat, until fully browned and no longer pink.

Transfer the uncooked rice and the cooked ground beef to the prepared baking dish. Pour in the beef consommé, French onion soup, and water. Stir thoroughly until evenly distributed.

Slice the butter and arrange evenly over the top of the mixture in the baking dish.

Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.

Remove the foil and return the dish to the oven. Bake uncovered for an additional 30 minutes. Optional: In the last 10 minutes, add shredded cheese or a crunchy topping if desired.

Remove from the oven. Fluff the casserole with a fork and serve while hot.
