In a bowl, blend the softened cream cheese and mayonnaise (if using) until smooth. Stir in dill (or chives), garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

Slice the cucumber paper-thin. Lightly salt the slices and let them sit briefly. Pat dry with paper towels to prevent soggy bread.

Spread the cream cheese mixture on the bread slices. Layer the cucumber slices evenly over half of the slices. Top with the remaining slices of bread to form sandwiches.

Remove crusts. Cut each sandwich into preferred shapes, such as triangles or fingers.

Serve immediately, or cover gently and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Best served chilled or at room temperature.
